Numerous medical stations will be located at the start, on the course and at the finish. All medical areas will be large RED and WHITE tents staffed by medical volunteers dressed in RED shirts.

Green Efforts

Here are a few things we’ll be implementing this year…green-recycle-symbol

  1. Recycling. From start to finish, we’ll be recycling plastic, paper and cardboard. All the used water bottles and Cytomax bottles discarded over race weekend will be recycled. That’s over 100,000 bottles that won’t clog up the landfill.
  2. Green Portable Toilets. All the portable toilets will use eco-friendly non-toxic chemicals.
  3. Reducing and Offsetting Our Carbon Footprint. About 80% of the carbon footprint of any race comes from athlete and spectator travel. We encourage athletes and spectators to use public transportation or rideshare.

Here are a few suggestions for how you can go green too:

During training…

  1. Trash Runs. During your training, designate at least one “easy run” as Trash Run day. Take a plastic bag and a pair of gloves with you on your usual route and pick up plastic bottles and aluminum cans along the way. If you belong to a running club, suggest the club designate the occasional Saturday or Sunday group run as ‘Beautification Day.’
  2. Carpool to workouts and races. Every mile you drive produces about 1 pound of CO2. Instead of driving to a group training run, call a friend or running club member and arrange to rideshare. Same goes for travel to the race.
  3. Fueling on the run. Instead of using single-serve energy gel packets on your runs, consider buying in bulk and using a belt system. If you must use single-serve packets, put the used packets in a pocket and dispose of them at home.

On race day…

  1. Help us recycle and compost. Throw that banana peel or water bottle in the right bin – they’ll be marked and many will be manned by volunteers.
  2. Recycle your old running shoes. We are partnering with Haven for Hope, so bring your old running shoes to the Expo and drop them in the shoe bin.  There will be a shoe drop location at the finish line as well. More
  3. Register online. In an effort to reduce paper use, we encourage all runners to register online.
  4. Opt-out for medals and t-shirts. If you’re a veteran of many marathons, you might not want or need another t-shirt or medal. If so, you can decline either or both.
